The last page of Vancouver's 2020 Green Action Plan, a document that sets Vancouver's goals for becoming the greenest city in the world, contains this image.
This image incentivizes in two ways. First, it helps us appreciate the benefits from the action that was taken, namely, all the trees, water, energy, solid waste, and greenhouse gases that were saved. Second, it also acts as an alternate reality incentive (or a subjunctive incentive). It has us imagine what the world would be like if we were to take the alternative action (using un-recycled content). But since this incentive describes an action already taken, it cannot incentivize the already-taken action. Instead, it works to incentivize future actions ― the next time we print a large report, we should use 100% post-comsumer recycled content.
